Project Two: Comments

Felix:
Good drawings skills and prism studies - well presented. Atmospheric and well sculpted site. It sets up a memorable situation. The distant approach shot captures the proposition very well.

Yulia:
Strong architectural proposition and a deliberate and careful site specific response. The first architectural proposition (two volumes in site) was evocative and suggestive of a more complex form traversing the hill. It would have been good to develop this further.
The final proposition remains interesting, offering a complex sequence of spaces within a restrained block form. The ranges of displayed view points are varied and effective. Lighting effects could have been developed further.

Eric
The combined cubes present an interesting response to the program: two distinct built forms linked by an intervening element. The relationship between the proposed site and landform is also strong as the proposed valley allows the development of the building as bridge. The night shot is evocative.

James
Interesting architectural exploration in the sketches. Promising initial architectural proposition and consistent development of this. The site is diagrammatic and would have benefitted from more development. However architectural devices such as the cantilever and courtyard gives the scheme strong definition and places it is an interesting relationship to the site.

Joy
Early texture studies are very strong. Here cubes are presented as empty spaces – ready to be occupied. The final model lacks this quality.
Close-up representations are very evocative. Texture and light has been well handled and adds to the material quality of the building. The design of the site is more intricately worked out in the immediate context of the building.

Justine
The first architectural proposition offers interesting spatial possibilities (however these have not been developed in the final form)

Kal
Very strong drawings. Variety of architectural situations has been explored.
The first architectural proposition – combined cubes- is very strong, however could have benefited from further editing or refinement.

Joson
Strong early texture sectional studies. Very clear and deliberate treatment of the site. Relationship between site and building is well developed. Up to date and consistent production.

Muhammad
The final images represent a substantial improvement in the design. The two blocks + intervening element is clear response to the program. The two blocks- one retreating and one projecting forward, presents a subtle response to the proposed site situation. The application of the textures has also improved.

Christine
Early prism steadies are very well drawn and their diversity is commendable. Beautiful development of textures.
Dramatic site and interesting architectural proposition: floating cubes in void.

Samuel
Good drawing skills. The textures are well developed. The development of the site is strong and specific. Particularly the distinction between the forest and plane is well developed and could have been the focus of the design. The cubic forms read as too solid. One cannot imagine occupation of the spaces. This aspect of the design requires further development.

Yi QI
Architectural proposition is sound and has been sited carefully. The development of the building as a ridge is also a strong idea and has potential for further development.

Zoha
Clear site proposal. The proposed urban quality could have been developed further. The proposition of the building as retaining element and then pavilion in landscape is also strong

Project One: Comments

The group has collectively preformed very well in this exercise. Sincere congratulations to you all. Find below some comments that have highlighted the positive qualities of individual schemes. Some general observations:

Projects that undertook research in relevant architectural precedents have benefitted from the process and have been able to develop the project to a more complex level of resolution. Projects that have taken more careful approach to the construction of the blog have been able to demonstrate a detailed and consistent approach to the evolution of the design. This has been beneficial in the assessment and critical evaluation of the work. The top projects in the group are characterized by consistent attention to all aspects of the project and successful development of the architectural proposition beyond the original diagram.

Christine
Clear approach to the datum. Strong translation of sketch into architectural proposal and the consistent development of this in three dimensions. Careful analysis and reference to architectural precedents has helped the development of this project. Well presented blog.

Eric
Interesting approach to the datum with the creation of the underground open court. The early development of the scheme was particularly strong and the proposition is convincing in relation to the gallery program.

Felix
Very strong articulation of the internal spaces. The application material texture is particularly well handled and controlled. The videos capture the interior quality very well.

James
A strong proposal particularly well developed in the final stages of its evolution. The proposition amplifies the qualities of the original sketch, maintaining its conceptual strength.

Joson
Clear approach to the datum and treatment of stair/circulation. Strong translation of sketch into architectural proposal and the consistent development of this in three dimensions. Well presented blog.

Joy
A clear and dramatic approach to the datum. The scheme pays attention to the program, making a clear distinction between the gallery and the studio spaces. The distinction is well developed in relationship to an attitude to stair or circulation.

Justin
The early sketch displays a clear attitude to the datum. The proposed spaces are suggestive of dramatic interior spaces - particularly with respect to spatial apertures for lighting.

Kal
The project proposes a strong contrast between the space above and below ground level. The former is developed as topographical /landscape element that informs the broader manipulation of the ground plane or the site. The approach avoids reading the datum as a flat plane and proposes a conceptually consistent treatment.

Muhammad
Very good translation of the section into an architectural proposal. A very strong approach to the design of stair or circulation- as exhibition space. Consistent development of the three dimensional proposal.

Olivia
The project proposes a strong contrast between the space above and below ground level. The above ground element has been developed in more detail and displays an interesting play between plan and section. The treatment avoids simplistic extrusion of space from plan into three dimensions.

Samuel
Clear approach to the datum. Strong translation of sketch into an architectural proposal. Clear approach to the treatment of stair or circulation where the entire building acts as a ‘stair’. Subtle and restrained in its formal articulation. Project specific approach to topography or treatment of ground plane.

Sharon
Initial sketches are very graphic and their translation into architectural space difficult. The early translation are evocative of this problem, however, the final sketch up images demonstrate a substantial and promising development. In particular the interior image shown at this stage is very evocative.

Tommy
Strong translation from initial sketch to architectural proposition and clear development of this.
Strong approach to the architectural articulation of the ‘stair’ as public space. The architectural quality of the upper level is well developed - particularly the geometry of the roof plane.

Trentan
In this scheme the final stages of the design labeled as rendered views has been well done allowing the development of the upper levels in material and spatial detail.

Yuliya
Clear strategy to the treatment of stair or circulation where the entire building acts as a ‘stair’. Subtle and restrained in its formal articulation. Project specific approach to topography or treatment of ground plane. The application of texture to facade is very well controlled. The Project was particularly well developed in the final stages of the design and benefitted very much from reference to appropriate precedents.

Zoha
Clear translation from the section sketch. An interesting approach to the articulation of the stairs – presenting them as meeting point, display area and also as a device to create a ‘grand’ interior.
